Now that summer has kicked in, so have the games for the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League qualifications.
This week Gzira Utd surprised everyone, including non-football supporters with their unexpected win against Hajduk Split 3-1.
While false news was circulating about Brazilian midfielder Ronaldinho joining Birkirkara FC, Gzira Utd were preparing for their game against Hajduk Split.
WHAT A GAME!
The star of the game was Hamed Kone with his two scored spectacular goals, one overshadowing the other. The Ivory Coast striker scored the two final goals to propel the Maroons bringing a 3-1 win over Hajduk Split in Croatia to secure the team’s place in the second qualifying round of the Europa League.
Gzira Utd had all the good reasons to celebrate this result, considering that they are writing history for their club.
This result was unexpected after losing the first leg at the Centenary Stadium last week 2-0 and then this week after they found themselves behind after only seven minutes of play. Yet the Maroons refused another defeat and they fought back with heart.
Gzira Utd. managed to draw level when on the 57th minute Arthur Oyama sent a cross into the path of Jefferson who out jumped his marker to head the ball into the net.
All efforts given during the game were rewarded.
On the other hand, Hibernians were eliminated from the Europa League after suffering another defeat, this time by Shakhtyor Soligrosk from Belarus. They were defeated 1-0 and came home empty-handed.
At times it’s not how big you are, but the effort you put.
Praise for Gzira Utd spread fast on Facebook with some telling them to have made Malta proud.
What will the next step for Gzira Utd. be?
